Hutson, who passed away last year\u00a0after a six-year battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/John-Obit-Photo-from-AJ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12807 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/John-Obit-Photo-from-AJ.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a>Hutson\u00a0served 23 years with the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Environmental Trust<\/a>, where he was responsible for negotiating, drafting and processing easements that conserved 43,500 acres of farm, forest, historic and open space land.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn\u2019s legacy is more than acres preserved,\u201d said Maryland Environmental Trust Director William Leahy. \u201cHe encouraged and guided 265 families in the process of conserving their own legacies, and he personally mentored dozens of interns, staff and volunteers. This fund is being established both to honor his career, and to inspire new participants to carry on the good work of conserving open space, here in Maryland and nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fund initially will be used to purchase a memorial bench and plaque to be installed at the trail head of a recently opened hiker-biker trail at Bacon Ridge Natural Area in Anne Arundel County.
