{"id":12703,"date":"2017-01-06T13:42:20","date_gmt":"2017-01-06T18:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=12703"},"modified":"2017-04-14T13:58:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T17:58:00","slug":"mallows-bay-national-marine-sanctuary-designation-moves-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/01\/06\/mallows-bay-national-marine-sanctuary-designation-moves-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Mallows Bay National Marine Sanctuary Designation Moves Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Public Comment Accepted Until March 31<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5767\/19917504373_3243818566_n.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"241\" \/>The <a href=\"dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is proud to announce that a unique archaeological, cultural and historical site in Charles County is another step closer to being named a National Marine Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>The public review process officially began today with the <a href=\"http:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/mallows-bay\/mallows-proposed-deis-dmp.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">publishing<\/a> of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement and Proposed Management Plan for the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/mallowsbay.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located on the Potomac River only 40 miles from the nation\u2019s capital, Mallows Bay is renowned for its diverse collection of historic shipwrecks, recreational opportunities and scenic beauty.\u00a0The area contains a diverse collection of over 100 shipwrecks dating back to the Civil War and World War I as well as thousands of Native American artifacts.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMallows Bay is a special place with cultural and historical significance to the country, state and local community,\u201d said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. \u201cWe are pleased that this community-driven process is proceeding as planned, and we look forward to the day that we can preserve this Maryland landmark while maintaining public access for anglers, boaters and others. This designation will bring national attention and recognition to the area, which will spur economic development and growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The department has been working on the designation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Maryland Historical Trust, Charles County and numerous other community organizations and citizens.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5472\/30369266576_70052cb629_n.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The progress of the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary nomination is a fitting commemoration of the centenary of America&#8217;s entry into World War I,&#8221; said Maryland State Historic Preservation Officer Elizabeth Hughes. \u201cThe Maryland Historical Trust is proud of the opportunity to preserve and interpret such a nationally important maritime cultural landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA National Marine Sanctuary designation for Mallows Bay would focus well deserved national attention on this Charles County treasure,\u201d said Charles County Commissioner President Peter F.
