{"id":12318,"date":"2016-12-21T11:17:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T16:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=12318"},"modified":"2017-04-14T13:58:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T17:58:00","slug":"public-access-enhanced-on-eastern-shore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/12\/21\/public-access-enhanced-on-eastern-shore\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Access Enhanced on Eastern Shore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Board of Public Works Approves of New Sites in Cecil and Queen Anne&#8217;s Counties<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7480\/16286507652_306190001d_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7480\/16286507652_306190001d_n.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a>The Board of Public Works unanimously approved funds today to assist the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0expand public access to waterways in Cecil and Queen Anne\u2019s counties.\u00a0Both <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/ProgramOpenSpace\/Program-Open-Space-101.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Program Open Space<\/a> projects will be managed as part of existing <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Park Service<\/a> lands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese important projects reflect Maryland&#8217;s long-term commitment to conserving our natural resources while providing outdoor recreation opportunities for our residents and visitors,\u201d said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. &#8220;Through these two targeted acquisitions, we will enhance the user\u00a0experience at our state parks.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With approval, the department will now acquire 180 acres of forested property adjacent to <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/elkneck.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Elk Neck State Park<\/a> in Cecil County to expand trail and water access along the Elk River. The purchase\u00a0is being leveraged with a 50 percent contribution from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The department will also open new boating sites and enhance existing fishing opportunities along the Wye River in Queen Anne\u2019s County, which will become\u00a0part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/wyeisland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area<\/a>. The\u00a0partnership with the Conservation Fund will allow the department to acquire a new 20-acre tract, which includes two existing piers that can be used for motorized and nonmotorized watercraft.
