Hunters may use firearms to harvest sika and white-tailed deer during this season.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two-week firearm season is our most popular hunting opportunity,\u201d said Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto. \u201cNot only is the harvest over this period a critical part of the department\u2019s deer management program, it also allows hunters to spend time outdoors with family and friends after the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/white-tailed-deer-seasons-and-bag-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\">bag limits<\/a>\u00a0for the season are:<a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/43-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12033 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/43-1-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"43-1\" width=\"325\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/43-1-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/43-1.jpg 608w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Statewide<\/strong>: One antlered white-tailed deer. Three sika deer, no more than one antlered.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/deer-management-regions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Region A<\/a><\/strong>: One antlerless white-tailed deer. Antlerless deer season is open Dec. 9-10 on private land and Dec. 10 on public land. Hunters may only take two antlerless deer total for the license year.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/deer-management-regions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Region B<\/a><\/strong>: Ten antlerless white-tailed deer. One bonus antlered white-tailed may be taken per year during a\u00a0weapon season of the hunter\u2019s choice. A hunter must first take two antlerless white-tailed deer and purchase a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/licenses-stamps-permits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bonus Antlered Deer Stamp<\/a>\u00a0before taking a second antlered deer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New this year:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sika deer season is open in all counties,<\/li>\n<li>Hunters in Caroline County may use a rifle or handgun during the firearm seasons, and<\/li>\n<li>Changes have been made to the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/10\/07\/chronic-wasting-disease-rules-altered\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chronic Wasting Disease Management Area<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hunters are reminded an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/white-tailed-deer-seasons-and-bag-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\">antler point restriction<\/a> has been instituted for white-tailed deer. One may harvest up to two antlered deer per license year, which have two or fewer points on each antler present. Any additional antlered deer taken within the legal seasons and bag limits must have at least three points on one antler. Licensed junior hunters are exempt from the restriction.<\/p>\n<p>Those hunters who use tree stands are strongly advised to wear a full-body safety harness, which\u00a0should be secured at all times, including while climbing up or down the stand. Using a sliding knot, commonly known as a prussic knot, attached to a line that is tied above the tree stand allows hunters to be secure from when they leave the ground to when they return.
