The trail will include the first-ever campsite designed to support off-highway vehicle riders. Other features will include single-track hare scramble style trail sections, technical trail spurs, internal loops, vehicular pull-offs and in another first \u2013 a full size rock crawl area.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/\"><u>Maryland<\/u> Department of Natural Resources<\/a>, which manages state forests and parks, seeks to open the 6 miles of improved\u00a0trails late next spring or early summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproving access to our public lands and resources, and enhancing and promoting outdoor recreation is at the heart of what we do,\u201d said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. \u201cProviding an enjoyable and safe area to purse one\u2019s passion in an ecologically-responsible and sustainable\u00a0manner is in everyone\u2019s interest. We appreciate the patience of the off-road community as we developed this project and look forward to welcoming riders and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/20161128_125527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13635 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/20161128_125527-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"25\" \/><\/a>The new St. John\u2019s Rock Road trail, located near the Allegany and Garrett County line, will complement the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/orv.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">state\u2019s existing off-road trail system<\/a>\u00a0in select areas of <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_garrettforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Garrett<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_potomacforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Potomac<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_savageriverforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Savage River<\/a> state forests.<\/p>\n<p>All off-road vehicles must be registered annually with the department and display a current registration sticker, which is available for purchase <a href=\"http:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/dnrcompassportal\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_centers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">department service centers<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/mdforests.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a> offices.\u00a0An off-road vehicle is defined as a motorized vehicle designed for or capable of cross-country travel on land, water, snow, ice, marsh, swampland or other natural terrain. This includes a four-wheel drive or low pressure tire vehicle, an automobile, a truck, a motorcycle and related two-wheel vehicles, an amphibious machine, a ground effect or air cushion vehicle, a snowmobile or golf cart.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Maryland Recreational Access and Trail Restoration\u00a0project is estimated to cost $1.4 million and is set for completion around May or June 2017 (weather dependent).
