{"id":11746,"date":"2016-10-19T10:44:32","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T14:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=11746"},"modified":"2017-04-14T15:12:02","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T19:12:02","slug":"board-of-public-works-approves-rural-legacy-program-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/10\/19\/board-of-public-works-approves-rural-legacy-program-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Board of Public Works Approves Rural Legacy Program Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Enhanced Funding Helps Preserve and Protect 4,615 Acres<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7439\/10089707485_41df529dc3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7439\/10089707485_41df529dc3.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a>The Board of Public Works unanimously adopted a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a><\/span> recommendation today to approve 15 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/RuralLegacy\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Rural Legacy Program<\/a><\/span> grants, totaling $17,663,385, to permanently preserve approximately 4,615 acres of working farms, forests and open space across the state, from Garrett to Wicomico County.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The projects include protecting endangered species, natural habitats, productive farmland, scenic view sheds, shorelines, wetlands and woodlands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese grants provide a cost-effective way to permanently conserve culturally, ecologically and historically important parcels of land in our state,\u201d said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. \u201cProtecting and preserving these important and irreplaceable tracts of land helps us retain our agricultural and rural character, and aids our efforts to meet our Chesapeake Bay restoration commitments and goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1997, the Rural Legacy Program is designed to preserve large tracts of productive and valuable agricultural and forested lands that contain exceptional features by acting through local government and private land trust <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/Sponsors.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sponsors<\/a>, which in turn work with willing property owners in 31 locally-designated rural areas situated in every county.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the public-private partnership program has permanently protected 87,811 acres through conservation easements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/04\/04\/governor-hogan-restores-and-protects-funding-for-land-conservation-and-preservation-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">A new law championed and signed last year by Governor Larry Hogan<\/a> increased state funding for critical land conservation, preservation and recreation programs by $60 million over the next two years.
