{"id":11570,"date":"2016-10-17T11:00:20","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T15:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=11570"},"modified":"2016-10-17T12:17:12","modified_gmt":"2016-10-17T16:17:12","slug":"striped-bass-survey-indicates-below-average-reproduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/10\/17\/striped-bass-survey-indicates-below-average-reproduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Striped Bass Survey Indicates Below-Average Reproduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Results Follow<\/em>\u00a0<em>Very Successful Spawning Year <\/em><em>in<\/em><em> 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/GV_JI_net_deploy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11699 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/GV_JI_net_deploy-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"gv_ji_net_deploy\" width=\"375\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a><\/span> announced today that the 2016 young-of-the-year striped bass index, a measure of bass spawning success in Maryland\u2019s portion of the Chesapeake Bay is 2.2, well below the 63-year average of 11.7.\u00a0The index represents the average number of less than 1 year old fish caught in 132 samples during the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/striped-bass\/juvenile-index.aspx\">Juvenile Striped Bass Survey<\/a><\/span>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this year\u2019s striped bass index is disappointing, it is not a concern unless we observe poor spawning in multiple, consecutive years,\u201d said Fishing and Boating Services Director David Blazer. \u201cVery successful spawning years, as recently as 2011 and 2015, should more than compensate for this below-average year-class. Nonetheless, the department and our partners will continue to work to maintain a sustainable fishery for our commercial watermen and recreational anglers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Striped bass show great variability in spawning success from year-to-year. Occasional large year-classes are produced but are normally interspersed with average or below-average year-classes.\u00a0One-year-old striped bass from last year\u2019s very successful year-class were found in abundance. These fish will support local fisheries in the future and later join the coastal spawning population.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/stripers_Jul2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11700 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/stripers_Jul2014-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"stripers_jul2014\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/stripers_Jul2014-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/stripers_Jul2014-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/stripers_Jul2014-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Survey results indicate that most anadromous species \u2013 fish that return to freshwater to spawn \u2013 experienced similarly low reproduction in 2016, potentially indicating that environmental factors such as dry weather and low river flows during the spring season may have contributed to the poor results. Intensive spring surveys found normal numbers of striped bass females on the spawning grounds however sensitive egg and larval stages often don\u2019t survive adverse conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The department has monitored the reproductive success of striped bass and other fish in the bay since 1954.
