As such, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Maryland<\/u> Department of Natural Resources<\/a> urges motorists to stay alert for deer and other wildlife this time of year as these animals seek out food supplies and mates.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeer activity will peak during their breeding season, which occurs from mid-October through November,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a> Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cDeer often travel without regard for roads or traffic during this time period. Motorists need to be especially alert from sunset to dawn as deer are more active during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/4\/3734\/10294414993_2ba63c8927_n_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/4\/3734\/10294414993_2ba63c8927_n_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>Motorists are reminded to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Slow down<\/strong> if a deer crosses the road ahead.\u00a0Deer often travel in groups and others may be nearby.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch the shoulder.\u00a0<\/strong>Be alert for deer standing along the shoulder\u00a0as they\u00a0may suddenly move into the roadway.\u00a0Slow down and sound your horn to scare them away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gradually\u00a0brake<\/strong> to avoid hitting a deer but do not swerve\u00a0as this may cause you to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the severity of the accident.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be particularly attentive<\/strong> in the early morning and evening periods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay alert<\/strong> and slow down in areas where deer crossing signs are posted.\u00a0These indicate locations of frequent deer activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cooling temperatures, colorful foliage\u00a0and unpredictable wildlife \u2500 all signs that the fall season is upon us.
