{"id":11296,"date":"2016-09-08T09:09:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T13:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=11296"},"modified":"2017-04-14T15:15:55","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T19:15:55","slug":"largemouth-bass-reef-project-seeks-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/09\/08\/largemouth-bass-reef-project-seeks-volunteers\/","title":{"rendered":"Largemouth Bass Reef Project Seeks Volunteers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>To Provide Potomac River Nursery Habitat<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8429\/29506657616_b0b3a23909_o_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8429\/29506657616_b0b3a23909_o_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Andrea Moran, Chesapeake Bay Foundation\" width=\"250\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a><\/span>, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and National Harbor have formed a taskforce to construct and place 80 small concrete reef balls in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/smoots-bay.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Smoots Bay<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the Potomac River\u00a0to help improve the fishery.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe submerged grasses in this largemouth bass nursery have virtually disappeared over the past decade and the spawning success of these fish has consequently declined,\u201d Tidal Bass Program Manager Joseph Love, PhD. said. \u201cThese reef balls will provide important protective habitat for juvenile fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The taskforce is seeking <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/smoots-bay.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">volunteers<\/a> for any of the three reef building days at National Harbor: Sept. 16, 17 and 18.<\/p>\n<p>The work will involve mixing and pouring concrete into simple fiberglas molds, the \u201chatching\u201d of the balls after the concrete has cured, and a general cleanup. This is a hands-on event suitable for anyone over the age of 16.
