{"id":11179,"date":"2016-08-29T12:41:16","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=11179"},"modified":"2016-08-29T15:35:37","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T19:35:37","slug":"fish-parasite-absent-in-maryland-trout-samples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/08\/29\/fish-parasite-absent-in-maryland-trout-samples\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish Parasite Absent in Maryland Trout Samples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Natural Resources Surveys Western Maryland Streams<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8525\/29210108142_7289f89526_o_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8525\/29210108142_7289f89526_o_d.jpg\" alt=\"Cottus caeruleomentum\" width=\"255\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blue Ridge Sculpin<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\">The Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> recently joined the U.S. Geological Survey and National Park Service in a survey of Hunting Creek and Owens Creek in Frederick County to follow up on the 2015 discovery of Dermocystidium, a single-celled parasite effecting Blue Ridge sculpin fish, in Blue Blazes Creek near Thurmont.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">The joint federal\/state team found no signs of the parasite in samples of trout in the two Maryland streams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe identification of\u00a0this parasite\u00a0is of serious concern due to the potential impact on our state\u2019s trout population,\u201d Fisheries Service Director David Blazer said. \u201cWe are cautiously pleased that we found no signs of the cyst-causing parasite in trout samples within Catoctin Mountain National Park and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr2.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/western\/cunningham.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Cunningham Falls State Park<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/west-coast-fish-pathogen-now-found-east\" target=\"_blank\">2015 discovery<\/a> of Dermocystidium in Maryland is the first discovery of a parasite in the Eastern United States similar to the species found in Pacific salmon and trout. Blue Ridge sculpin are small fish prevalent in cold, rocky, freshwater streams, which also serve as prime trout habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland and federal fisheries biologists will continue to monitor and track the distribution of the parasite and will remain vigilant in sampling western Maryland fish for any indication of infection.
