While you can wade in summer months or fish from the bank, a float-fishing trip in a raft or kayak is a unique way to experience all that this rolling river offers. Better yet, several fishing guide services are available to float anglers down the river and help you catch the trout of a lifetime!<\/p>\n<p>The adventure begins at the catch-and-return area downstream of Jennings Randolph Lake. Its cold, gin-clear water supports populations of wild brown, rainbow and brook trout. Stocked by the state\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Fisheries Service<\/a>, cutthroat trout also are caught.<\/p>\n<p>Once floating this stretch, you will not see a house or passing car\u2014only the steep green mountain ridges on both sides of the river. Despite nearby industry, the river now supports a great fishery in this area as many federal, state, private and non-profit organizations have worked together to improve water quality during the past three decades.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10730\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10730\" class=\"wp-image-10730 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/06\/Rainbow-Trout_Harold-Harsh2.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Rick Morgan (front) and his son Bryan with rainbow trout; by Harold Harsh<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a result, the river has become very productive and capable of producing some true trophy rainbow and brown trout. The river is managed by <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/trout\/stocking.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">stocking<\/a> fingerling trout that grow exceptionally well due to the abundant food supply of aquatic invertebrates and forage fish.<\/p>\n<p>Access areas with boat ramps sit in both Westernport and the McCoole Fishery Management Area, four miles downstream.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland native and avid angler Neil Jacobs, who pursues trout from the Arctic Circle to South America, particularly enjoys fishing this section of the river.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fish the North Branch every opportunity I get,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so convenient, and provides trophy fish opportunities right here in my home state.\u201d<\/p>\n<table class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"background-color: #ff7700\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><strong>Bait Tips<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Aquatic insect hatches are prolific, as mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies are found in abundance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Terrestrial patters such as beetles, ants and inchworms produce good dry fly action during the summer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Larger brown trout and rainbow trout are frequently caught on large streamers as well as artificial minnow and crayfish lures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Phenomenal results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Continuing another five miles downstream to the Gary A. Yoder Fishery Management Area at Black Oak provides another good day of floating.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Nashed enjoys this section of the river best. \u201cI&#8217;ve been across this country, to Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, but few trips compare to a day I had on the North Branch of the Potomac River,\u201d he says. \u201cI found success with every possible technique\u2014from dry flies to nymphs to swinging streamers. It\u2019s almost difficult <em>not<\/em> to have great success here.\u201d He boasts of the number, size and health, noting, \u201cevery fish we caught was a healthy, chunky specimen full of vigor!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It truly is a one-of-a-kind fishing experience right here in Maryland. Your adventure awaits!Full of life, the fishery is a <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/management.aspx#eco\" target=\"_blank\">testament to solid management<\/a> of water flows and fingerling stockings.\u00a0\u201cThese efforts are paying off,\u201d Nashed adds.\u00a0\u201cContinued efforts should keep the vitality of the river going for years.\u00a0With a fishery this amazing so close to home, I hardly see a reason to venture to the western states very often.\u201d<\/p>\n<table style=\"background-color: #198fd4\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><strong>Know Before You Go<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">The river is large and the best flows to float-fish safely are about 300 cubic foot per second.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">A Maryland Non-Tidal Sport Fishing License is required to float-fish, and a Trout Stamp is needed in catch-and-return areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Both spin and fly fishing tackle are permitted on all North Branch Potomac River Trout Fishing Areas. Most fishing guide services provide fishing equipment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">Fishing is open year-round.
