{"id":10228,"date":"2016-05-06T11:40:03","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T15:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=10228"},"modified":"2016-05-06T11:41:24","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T15:41:24","slug":"department-adjusts-chronic-wasting-disease-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/05\/06\/department-adjusts-chronic-wasting-disease-approach\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Adjusts Chronic Wasting Disease Approach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Expands Management Area, Alters Deer Baiting Rules<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7572\/16286507012_5854f7fb51.jpg\" alt=\"Deer  photo\" width=\"122\" height=\"183\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> has updated its management approach for chronic wasting disease after discovering that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/03\/28\/five-deer-test-positive-for-chronic-wasting-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\">five white-tailed deer tested positive<\/a> last winter in Allegany County. One of the positive deer was harvested near Cumberland, approximately 10 miles west of all previous cases, marking the first documented\u00a0case outside\u00a0of the original Chronic Wasting Disease Management Area.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In response to this finding, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr2.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/CWD_in_Maryland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">management area<\/a> has been expanded to include all of Allegany County and the western portion of Washington County (see map in above link).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince discovering chronic wasting disease in West Virginia a decade ago, we have learned a significant amount about the disease and how hunters respond to it,\u201d Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cWith this data, we have elected to modify our response by lifting the ban on baiting or feeding deer within the area to ensure hunting remains popular in the region and adequate harvest levels are maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunters are an essential part of combating the disease as they help keep deer numbers in check, slow its spread, and provide us with additional data collection and points,\u201d Peditto said. \u201cThe presence of this naturally-occurring disease should not concern or stop hunters from enjoying the season or any venison they may acquire or consume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A total of 11 deer have tested positive for the disease in Maryland since 2010, all within Allegany County.
