Since natural foods, such as plants, berries and insects are scarce in the early spring, bears are particularly attracted to human-provided sources. The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr2.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> reminds Marylanders to be proactive and exercise good judgment to avoid contact.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping bears wild is a community effort that benefits both them and us,\u201d Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said.\u00a0 \u201cUsing care to avoid attracting bears now will help keep them away throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The department urges residents to clean or remove anything outdoors that may smell like food. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>locking\u00a0garbage in a bear-proof trash container, or keeping it inside until the day of pick-up;<\/li>\n<li>rinsing trash containers with ammonia to eliminate food odors;<\/li>\n<li>storing cooking grills inside or keeping them clean of food residue; and<\/li>\n<li>removing birdfeeders\u00a0from April through November \u2500 there are many wild food sources for birds during this time period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on living and camping around bears\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr2.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/bblivingwith.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>\u00a0or call the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service Western Regional Office at 301-777-2136.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Black bears are starting to leave their dens after a long winter slumber and search for food.
