This makes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">water heating the second largest energy expense<\/span> in your home.<\/p>\n<p>To help Maryland families\u00a0prepare for the cold months, we&#8217;ve collected five ways\u00a0to help cut costs on your water heating bill.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Heating Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Adjust\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/energysaver\/projects\/savings-project-lower-water-heating-temperature\">water heater thermostat to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (F)<\/a>\u00a0to get comfortable hot water for most household uses. Every 10-degree F reduction in the temperature can lower water heating costs up to 5 percent.<\/li>\n<li>Detect and repair leaky faucets right away. Replace old faucets with WaterSense labeled\u00a0low-flow faucets and shower heads, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/watersense\/products\/bathroom_sink_faucets.html\">can save the average family 700 gallons of water annually.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/energysaver\/projects\/savings-project-insulate-your-water-heater-tank\">Insulate your water heater.<\/a> Be careful not to cover the top, bottom, thermostat or burner compartment of natural gas or oil hot-water storage tanks. In addition, insulate the first 6\u00a0feet of hot and cold water pipes connected to the water heater.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in\u00a0a new energy-efficient water heater with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/index.cfm?c=water_heat.pr_water_heaters_landing\">ENERGY STAR label<\/a> to save energy long-term. ENERGY STAR certified water heaters can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/ia\/partners\/prod_development\/new_specs\/downloads\/water_heaters\/Water_Heater_Market_Profile_2010.pdf?0745-d9c5\">use 50 percent less energy<\/a> than equipment that meets the minimum federal standard.<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, a no-cost strategy that we can all\u00a0do is to\u00a0use hot water more efficiently. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Reduce water consumption<\/strong><\/span> by taking shorter showers, using cold water for most laundry loads or choosing shorter cycles on the dishwasher.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Through DHCD&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dhcd.maryland.gov\/website\/programs\/besmart\/home.aspx\">Be SMART Home Loan program<\/a>, you can also learn how to get innovative financing for energy efficiency upgrades to your home, which includes hot water\u00a0system improvements.
