{"id":7926,"date":"2015-07-16T19:50:37","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T23:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mdhousing.org\/?p=7926"},"modified":"2015-10-06T15:38:47","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T19:38:47","slug":"dhcd-prepares-students-for-the-workforce-through-baltimore-city-youthworks-summer-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dhcd\/2015\/07\/16\/dhcd-prepares-students-for-the-workforce-through-baltimore-city-youthworks-summer-program\/","title":{"rendered":"DHCD Prepares Students for the Workforce through Baltimore City YouthWorks Summer Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7917\" style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dhcd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/picture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7917\" class=\" wp-image-7917\" src=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dhcd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2015\/07\/picture1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Baltimore YouthWorks students participated in a college and career ready workshop, hosted by the DHCD Office of Human Resources.\" width=\"324\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baltimore YouthWorks students participated in a resume writing and mock interview workshop, hosted by the DHCD Office of Human Resources.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Landing a summer job is a rite of passage for many high school students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Whether it\u2019s part-time or seasonal, organizations keep teenagers busy during summer vacation while helping them earn a paycheck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mdhousing.org\/governor-larry-hogan-announces-1-million-for-job-placement-for-city-youth\/\">Governor Hogan committed $1 million in state funding to provide summer job opportunities for Baltimore City youth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Funding was allocated to the Youth Works and Hire One Youth programs through the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Through YouthWorks, DHCD hired two student interns to work at our office in Baltimore City.\u00a0\u00a0YouthWorks matches young people between the ages of 14 and 21 to five-week work experiences with private sector, nonprofit and government employers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\u201cAs a national leader in affordable housing and community development, we are always hiring people that will challenge the status quo, effectively communicate ideas and implement efficient housing solutions for Maryland citizens,\u201d said Amy Kipersztok, recruiting manager for DHCD\u2019s office of human resources. \u201cThrough YouthWorks, we can show our young people the value of coming to work and knowing that what they do makes a difference in the community.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Employment positions are targeted based on the students\u2019 career interests. Employers are encouraged to emphasize effective work behaviors and promote financial literacy for all participants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">In addition to providing administrative support, YouthWorks students are assisting DHCD staff with a project under the Division of Neighborhood Revitalization. They are helping gather demographic census data to build a portfolio for a new region receiving\u00a0\u00a0grant projects in the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\u201cWe provide a great learning opportunity for students who want to gain skills in an office environment,\u201d said Jennine Auerbach, YouthWorks supervisor and director of DHCD\u2019s office of administration and policy. \u201cFrom learning time consequences of being late to filling out timesheets \u2013 it\u2019s the little but important things they learn that matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">This week, Kipersztok and Recruiting Manager Alicia Townsend gave a presentation about\u00a0DHCD&#8217;s programs and hosted a\u00a0career ready workshop for the students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\u201cGaining work experience at a young age is very rewarding,\u201d added Kipersztock. \u201cThis program is every bit as meaningful for us too, because we get to learn as much from our student interns as they do from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">The YouthWorks slogan &#8220;Summer Jobs Launch Careers&#8221; describes the lasting effect that a productive summer job can have on a young person.
