NEW CARROLLTON, MD\u2014<\/b>The Department of Housing and Community Development today announced the closing of a $5 million loan to support the Mary Harvin Transformation Center Community Development Corporation\u2019s Southern Streams Health and Wellness Center through the Neighborhood BusinessWorks program. The new funds reflect a total of $6.6 million in department investment <\/span>in the $34.1 million redevelopment, which will turn the long-vacant brownfield site in Baltimore\u2019s Broadway East neighborhood into a 120,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility offering healthcare, workforce development, and community services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is proud to support Southern Streams Health and Wellness Center because we believe in a strong, thriving, healthy Baltimore City,\u201d <\/span>said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day<\/b>. \u201cI congratulate the Mary Harvin Transformation Center Community Development Corporation as this project is a key piece of East Baltimore\u2019s transformation into a vibrant hub for community, opportunity, and growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Southern Streams Health and Wellness Center is the next part of Mary Harvin Transformation Center Community Development Corporation\u2019s East Ba<\/span>ltimore Revitalization Plan, which has been adopted by the City of Baltimore. The redevelopment, spearheaded by the community development corporation of Southern Baptist Church,<\/span> will enhance community services and infrastructure, contributing to the overall well-being and stability of the neighborhood and offering a pathway toward sustainable community development and greater economic opportunity for local residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe work of community revitalization by restoring people as we rebuild properties in neglected and disadvantaged communities is imperative and requires increased local, state and federal investment for a sustainable and transformative impact for our urban centers for successive generations,\u201d <\/span>said Bishop Donte Lamont Hickman of Southern Baptist Church.<\/b><\/p>\n

Construction is expected to begin in late 2025, creating more than 200 construction jobs and sustaining more than 150 permanent jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>FY18 to FY25, the department awarded $850,000 in <\/span>grant funding through its Baltimore vacancy reduction efforts <\/span>and $825,000 of <\/span>Baltimore Regional Neighborhood Initiative<\/span><\/a> funding to the Southern Streams project for<\/span> acquisition of the vacant property and site preparation for the new building construction.<\/span><\/p>\n
