{"id":11534,"date":"2023-09-13T12:16:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T16:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dhcd\/?p=11534"},"modified":"2023-09-13T12:16:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T16:16:46","slug":"cecil-county-receives-775000-for-infrastructure-improvements-and-home-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dhcd\/2023\/09\/13\/cecil-county-receives-775000-for-infrastructure-improvements-and-home-repairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Cecil County Receives $775,000 for Infrastructure Improvements and Home Repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The awards are two of 13 across the state to be funded through the Community Development Block Grant program<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>NEW CARROLLTON, MD (September 13, 2023)<\/strong> &#8211; Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) has announced that Cecil County has received a total of $775,000 through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dhcd.maryland.gov\/Communities\/Pages\/programs\/CDBG.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program. The federal grants, administered by DHCD, will be used to support infrastructure improvements in the Town of Charlestown and home repairs for eligible county homeowners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cecil County received $550,000 to connect low and moderate income households to a new sewer line in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlestownmd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Town of Charlestown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s Holloway Beach community. The County was also awarded $225,000 to support a home repair program for low- to moderate-income county residents managed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/habitatsusq.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are so pleased to have been selected as one of the Fiscal Year 2024 recipients of a CDBG award,\u201d said Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger. \u201cThis block grant funding will bolster efforts to extend public sewerage to the Holloway Beach area\u2019s low- to moderate-income residents. This funding will also afford us the opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna to assist in rehabilitating homes with critical needs owned by qualified homeowners throughout Cecil County.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than $5 million in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dhcd.maryland.gov\/Documents\/PressReleases\/SFY24-CDBG-Awards.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fiscal Year 2024 Community Development Block Grants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were awarded to 13 projects in eight counties across Maryland, including improvements to infrastructure and community facilities, as well as programs serving homeless persons, persons with disabilities, and low- to moderate-income individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMaryland\u2019s local leaders have their finger on the pulse of their residents and communities, each with its unique needs,\u201d said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day. \u201cWith the partnership of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, we\u2019re excited to be a part of helping promote affordable homeownership in Cecil County.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The national Community Development Block Grant program was enacted into law by Congress as part of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. Since then, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program has supported community redevelopment, affordable housing, and the expansion of economic opportunities.
