{"id":3610,"date":"2019-06-25T10:40:16","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T14:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dgs\/?p=3610"},"modified":"2019-06-25T10:40:16","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T14:40:16","slug":"hogan-administration-announces-energy-saving-initiative-maryland-leads-by-example","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dgs\/2019\/06\/25\/hogan-administration-announces-energy-saving-initiative-maryland-leads-by-example\/","title":{"rendered":"Hogan Administration Announces Energy Saving Initiative, \u201cMaryland Leads by Example\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>R<\/em><em>educe Energy Consumption in State-owned Buildings by 10%<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ANNAPOLIS, MD<\/strong> \u2013 Governor Larry Hogan today signed the \u201cMaryland Leads by Example\u201d Executive Order, which directs the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) and the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) to develop and manage an energy savings initiative in state-owned buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur administration is committed to ensuring that our state-owned buildings are as energy efficient as possible,\u201d said Governor Hogan. \u201cThis initiative seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while saving taxpayer dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the \u201cMaryland Leads by Example\u201d initiative is to reduce energy consumption in state-owned buildings by 10% by 2029. To accomplish this goal, DGS has been tasked to annually audit state-owned buildings determined to be the least energy-efficient. The audit shall identify low-cost measures for increasing energy efficiency and savings while reducing future costs and expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Maryland Department of General Services is proud to be part of this important initiative, and looks forward to working with MEA to determine opportunities for increased energy savings,\u201d said DGS Secretary Ellington E. Churchill, Jr. \u201cTogether, our agencies will use best practices to identify the areas where we can save both energy and money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State of Maryland spends $210 million annually on utilities for state buildings,\u201d explained MEA Director Mary Beth Tung. \u201cAddressing energy efficiency to conserve costs makes sense fiscally for the state and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland Leads by Example\u201d also tasks both departments to make appropriate amendments to the General Performance Standards and Specifications for the State of Maryland Leased Facilities to promote the reduction of energy use and costs in state-leased facilities.
