The Maryland Dove is a replica of \u201cThe Dove,\u201d an early 17<sup>th<\/sup> century English trading ship. On March 25, 1634, a day that is now known as Maryland Day, settlers disembarked from two small sailing ships \u2013 the Ark and the Dove \u2013 onto Maryland soil. They landed at St. Clement\u2019s Island, the site of the future St. Mary\u2019s County.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWith the celebration of Maryland Day later this month, DGS is taking the opportunity to visit a piece of Maryland history,\u201d said DGS Secretary Ellington Churchill Jr. \u201cThe original Dove, one of Maryland\u2019s icons, is a part of our state\u2019s origin and our agency is proud to be a part of the preservation and restoration of this state treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Historic St. Mary\u2019s City Commission (HSMCC) has three capital projects approved in the Hogan administration\u2019s Fiscal Year 19 capital budget. The Dove Pier is a replacement of the pier where the historic Maryland Dove replica docks; the Visitor Center includes replacement of exterior fabric, updates to the fire protection system and restrooms; and the design of the replacement Maryland Dove. In order to expedite procurement, DGS is working with HSMCC to delegate procurement authority and management of these three projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Department\u2019s visit to the Maryland Dove is in association with Governor Larry Hogan\u2019s Cabinet Meeting being held today in Calvert County. State agency leaders have planned visits to various organizations throughout southern Maryland including Charles, St. Mary\u2019s, and Calvert Counties.
