December Honorees

Katie Shaffer has been with DCE for 2 years and is an administrator who coordinates design review and administration paperwork between 26 Local Education Administrations (LEA’s) and the Maryland Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC) for the Schools team at DCE.  Her organizational skills have helped the Schools and Design Review groups complete their legislatively mandated responsibilities by keeping track of projects that require technical reviews for quality control and appropriate use of state funds.   Her administration abilities have streamlined communications and the review process among the IAC, LEA’s, and DGS. Her follow-through on a multitude of tasks ensures that the work of many other people is performed well and on time.  Katie is detailed and thorough, understands the importance of accurate information, and routinely goes above and beyond to ensure that the Schools team is providing the best customer service possible.

During a short  break between interviews a phone call came into the conference room which Doreva Hinton answered. It was a person looking for the location of the tax court. The person on the phone was very concerned that they would miss their hearing as they were unsure of the location. Doreva was compassionate and very friendly to the person and told the person that she would find the phone number for that court and get back to him in a minute and then she put the person on hold and went to look for the number. James and I had overheard that the person was supposed to have a hearing at the tax court and they were unable to reach anyone to confirm their hearing. After a minute James Alston remembered that he knew someone that worked for the tax court so he picked up the phone and told the person that he would reach out to his associate and get them the information they required. He took the persons cell phone number and made a call to the tax court associate he knew and provided them with the information about the person’s request and that it was critical to make contact with them as a hearing was later in the day. James later verified that contact had been made with that person. As a supervisor I was very impressed with both of their exemplary customer service skills in this case and believe it was a perfect example of teamwork and going the extra mile to help a customer of the State of Maryland.

Rick Tyson joined the CMMS Unit in August of 2021 and immediately made an impact with his ability to analyze the status of various building equipment.  At this time, he also realized that the new Fluke sensors needed to be reconfigured, and he noticed issues with configuration problems with WAP units (Wireless Access Points) on the roof at the Catonsville Courthouse. Facilities Management is moving in the direction of predictive and preventive maintenance, and Rick is the staff member who has actively taken on this role to introduce the new technologies into this program. He works very closely with staff and the vendors eMaint and Fluke on the use of diagnostic tools on our equipment as well the addition of new versions of sensors to analyze building equipment. In May, Rick was able to use this new technology to recognize an issue with a chilled water pump at the Catonsville Courthouse. He was immediately able to assess the issue using the data coming from one of the sensors. He then proceeds to go onsite with his diagnostic tools to take readings on this equipment. Rick and Charles Clark, the Catonsville Courthouse Maintenance Supervisor, were able to provide needed maintenance on the equipment to resolve the issue with the chilled water pump. If this issue was not detected, it may have resulted in more damage to the equipment. For his continued dedication to working with all Facilities Management staff, and his attention to detail for moving the predictive and preventive maintenance program forward, Rick Tyson has been Caught Doing Great Service.

On July 1, 2022, the Courts of Appeal and the Sweeney District Court were transferred from the Annapolis Division to the Multi-Service Centers, so all judiciary is under one division. Meet the team of the newly created Region 8 – Courts of Appeal & Sweeney District Court: Regional Manager Douglan Stubee, Fiscal Tech Amy Mahoney, COA Maintenance Mechanic Sr. Joshua Cain, Sweeney DC Maintenance Supervisor Glen Jones, and Sweeney DC Maintenance Mechanic Sr. Roderick Neal. Since July, Douglan Stubee, Amy Mahoney and Joshua Cain have been busy setting up the Regional Office located in APod of the Tawes Building.  The staff from both buildings have been diligently working on setting up their operation to mirror all other Multi-Service Centers.  They have been embracing the change with a positive attitude, displaying excellent teamwork, and sharing resources as much as possible. Once a Maintenance Supervisor is hired for the COA the staffing will be complete. There is still work to be done before the Regional Office is totally up and running but the staff is certainly making the transition a little easier. This is a great example of teamwork and accepting change. Well-deserved team!
