July Honorees

Karen Riley is our lead accountant in our general accounting unit. June and July are some of our busiest months in fiscal, as we close out the fiscal year. Karen is instrumental in this process, preparing many journal entries to keep our accounts reconciled and balanced in order for us to close the books properly. We are also on accelerated deadlines for our credit card reconciliation process, which Karen is primarily responsible for. Additionally, Karen has had the responsibility of training a new employee during this hectic time. She has handled this all seamlessly, and has helped us be in a great position as we finish up the close out and get ready for the new year. Thanks for all of your hard work Karen!

Ilona Ghine is our Deputy Chief for Lease Management and Procurement and has been with the agency since October 2021. Since her tenure began, Ilona has been instrumental in bringing the new Visual Lease system into full implementation and ensuring the integrity of the data. Ilona has created multiple processes and procedures to ensure the leasing data is maintained in a consistent fashion and all users are trained on proper procedures. Most recently, Ilona stepped up to assist with the lease portfolio management while our Chief – Ms. Kimberly White focuses on the State Center Relocation project. Ilona has brought her strong leadership and systems thinking skills to these duties and is helping to keep the unit on track with the lease renewal schedule. I wanted to thank Ilona for her leadership and support of the Lease Management and Procurement unit.

Det. Christopher Baez responded to assist the Annapolis Division with a call for service for a bomb threat made to the Revenue Administration Building (RAD).  Through investigation Det. Baez was able to develop a suspect and mentored the initial responding officer in order to teach him how to write an application for a warrant. After being granted an arrest warrant for the suspect, Det. Baz used investigative techniques to discover several possible addresses for the suspect in Southern MD. Det. Baez worked closely with the Maryland State Police and the US Marshall’s Service task force to plan and conduct early morning attempts to arrest the suspect. Through attempts and further investigation, it was learned that the suspect was in a medical facility in Montgomery County and was in the process of being released.  Det. Baez with quick thinking, contacted the Montgomery County Police and they were able to detain the suspect until Det. Baez could respond and take custody of him. Det. Baez’s diligent work brought this investigation to a successful closure with an arrest.

In April 2021, Salisbury Administrative Aide Tricia Greene was in the office working at her desk when she noticed a young lady in the lobby who seemed very distraught.  Tricia went to the lobby and asked her if she needed help.  She quickly realized the woman had been assaulted and was in crisis. Tricia immediately took her into the DGS office for safety and called professionals for assistance. Since that unsettling day, Tricia and this lady have kept in touch and developed a friendship out of a tragic situation.  Tricia was there for her every step of the way, providing moral support and guidance as the victim navigated her way through the legal process.  The young lady’s family lives in Turkey, so Tricia was her only close support system. The woman has been back to the DGS office to thank Tricia for helping her overcome the darkest day of her life.  The legal process is now complete, and she is very much looking forward to her future.  Out of this tragic situation, Tricia and this young lady have developed a special friendship and a bond for life. This is a wonderful example of going even above and beyond “Doing Great Service.”
