Maryland Department of General Services to Host B&O Railroad Museum “First Mile Stable Project” Exhibit

BALTIMORE, MD – The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) Capital Grants Division and Facilities, Operations and Maintenance (FOM), in collaboration with the B&O Railroad Museum, today announced the opening of a new exhibit, the “First Mile Stable Project.” Six artfully-designed panels depict the project, which will provide the equine members of the Baltimore City Mounted Police Unit with a new home. The exhibit also depicts the history of horses used on the B&O Railroad, underscoring the significance of this project to the B&O Museum.

“We are excited to collaborate with the B&O Museum to host this educational exhibit, which will highlight our state’s proud history with law enforcement and the equine industry,” said Secretary Ellington E. Churchill, Jr. “DGS is proud to support this project, which will have a positive impact on our community and our citizens.”

The Board of Public Works approved a $250,000 capital grant for the project. A 12-stall stable will be built to house the Baltimore City Mounted Police Unit, which is the oldest mounted police unit in the country. Located on the west end of the B&O Railroad Museum’s right-of-way, the stable will provide a state-of-the-art home for the hard-working police horses, including a paddock area where the horses will have access to green space. Classroom and exhibition spaces will introduce young minds to new careers and promote positive community-police relations.

The exhibit represents the department’s on-going community outreach efforts. It is located in the lobby at 301 W. Preston St., and is free and open to the public.
