Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(PIKESVILLE, Md.) — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Wednesday evening in Baltimore County.

Shortly after 5 p.m.,troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack responded to I-695, prior to I-795,for a two-vehicle collision.

Initial investigation revealed that a red Chevrolet passenger car was traveling north on I-695.  At that time, traffic conditions caused vehicles to slow and the red Chevrolet struck the rear of a silver Volkswagen GTI, operated by Leah Birdsell Nguyen, 46, of Westminster.

The passenger of the red Chevrolet, who was identified as Leonid Shamis, 59, of Reisterstown, sustained injuries from the crash and went into cardiac arrest at the scene and later died.  The driver, Mikhail Shamis, 60, of Reisterstown, was also transported to the hospital.

All parties were transported to Northwest Hospital.  Mikhail Shamis and Nguyen have non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
