Teaching, Leading, Learning: Teachers of Promise Institute to be held at Hunt Valley Inn

Event Set for April 7

BALTIMORE – Soon-to-be college graduates in schools of education throughout Maryland, will flock to Baltimore next week for the 2017 Teachers of Promise Institute (TOP).

The annual institute will take place at the Hunt Valley Wyndham Grand Hotel on Friday, April 7. More than 130 graduating seniors will take part.

The Teachers of Promise Institute and Program began in 2007 as an adjunct to MSDE’s Maryland Teacher of the Year Program and not only encourages college students to teach in Maryland, but also provides a helpful transition from being a student to becoming a first year teacher. The program relies on the experience of Teachers of the Year and other award-winning educators. The program taps into these resources through establishing a mentor-protégé relationship between the award-winning teachers and outstanding pre-service seniors from as many as 22 Maryland colleges and universities.

The program culminates in a one day institute underwritten by MSDE, Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) and SMART Technologies, so there is no cost to participating students. Mentors and students will take part in guided discussions, interactive activities and learn tips and advice from former Teachers of Promise. All participating pre-service teachers receive a Teachers of Promise State Certificate from MSDE.

In all, approximately four to eight students were selected from each school to attend the event. Students were selected based on their high levels of academic achievement and teaching skills. Mentors and their protégés work together throughout the spring and summer transition period until the new teachers are placed in their schools and teaching assignments.

The Teachers of Promise Institute and Program has been recognized by The Daily Record as one of Maryland’s most innovative programs and was also featured in Maryland Life magazine.
