MSDE Offers Professional Development Events for Teachers and Administrators

Events Will Be Held During Several Summer Sessions

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) will sponsor two Professional Development events for educators this summer including a Teacher Leadership Summit and Pre-K-2nd Grade Educator Symposiums.

The Maryland Teacher Leadership Summit is a two-day summit designed to promote and develop teacher-led initiatives across the state. Modeled after the successful National Teach to Lead Summit, the Maryland event will help to spotlight and support a selective group of teacher-led initiatives across Maryland as well as provide teacher-led teams with hands-on training to refine their program models, identify support, and communicate their initiatives to key stakeholders. The Summit also helps to promote teacher leadership among key local-systems level stakeholders including superintendents, principals and national and local partners engaged to advise and support teacher-led teams to refine innovative proposals and ideas. The summit will be held for teacher-led teams selected by peers through an application process.

WHEN: July 18-19, 2017

WHERE: Chesapeake Bay Foundation – Philip Merrill Environmental Center
6 Herndon Ave.
Annapolis, MD 21403

Additionally, MSDE will sponsor Pre-K-Grade 2 Educator Symposiums which focus on essential practices to support principals and teachers of early learners with research, skills, and strategies to increase student achievement.

The objectives for the two-day symposiums are to explore brain research that is focused on children aged 4-8 in order to understand developmentally appropriate instruction and recognize how developmentally appropriate instruction in Pre-K-2nd Grade students impact future learning. Participants will then work to identify developmentally appropriate instructional techniques and strategies that can be implemented in the Pre-K-2 classroom to support further brain development.
