Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, September 19

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 19, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

Please note there will be no Monday work session this month.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following (times approximate):

9:30 a.m. State Assessment Analysis

The Maryland State Board of Education will hear a report on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) results. Maryland’s PARCC scores were released in August. MSDE staff will take an in-depth look at those results, proficiency trends, and achievement gaps.

11:30 a.m. MSDE Research

The State Superintendent and MDSE staff will provide for the board the plans for MSDE’s new Office of Research and Strategic Data Use, including the creation and execution of a research agenda, and its work with local school systems to use data and conduct research.

2 p.m. Gifted and Talented Education

The State Board will recognize the 2016 Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education
(EGATE) Schools. Ten schools received that recognition last year.

2:15 p.m. Elementary Principals

The State Board will recognize the 2017 Maryland Elementary Principal of the Year,
Michael Brown, principal of Pocomoke Elementary in Worcester County; and 2017 Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year, Lorie Barnes. Last year, Ms. Barnes was assistant principal at Monarch Global Academy; this year she is principal at Severna Park Elementary.
