Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, January 30

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 30, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

In addition, the State Board will hold a work session on Monday, January 29, beginning at 10 a.m. Board members are expected to review the Maryland Longitudinal Data System, Baltimore City facilities, Kindergarten Readiness Assessment data, and plans for social studies assessments.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following (times approximate):

9:35 a.m. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

The State Board will discuss the US Department of Education’s feedback on the State’s ESSA plan. US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos approved Maryland’s plan earlier this month.

9:50 a.m. Prince George’s County Audit

Prince George’s County School System CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell will meet with the State Board to discuss the independent audit of the system’s graduation rates.

11:20 a.m. Baltimore City Public Schools

The State Board will hear a report on progress on the Memorandum of Understanding between Baltimore City Public Schools and MSDE.

2 p.m. Maryland Secondary School Assistant Principal of the Year

The State Board will recognize Debra O’Byrne, assistant principal at Howard County’s Glenwood Middle School, recently named MSSAP Assistant Principal of the Year.

2:15 p.m. Graduation

The State Board will review adjusted cohort graduation and dropout rates for 2017.
