Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, January 27

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, December 27, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the State Board room.  Items on this month’s agenda include the following:

9:10 a.m.          Title I Distinguished School
The State Board will honor the latest Maryland school to be highlighted with this national award.

9:30 a.m.          ESEA Flexibility
The State Board will hear a report on MSDE’s plans to request an extension of its flexibility waiver from the U.S. Department of Education.  Federal officials granted Maryland a waiver in July 2014, allowing the State to move forward with reforms designed to improve student learning and classroom instruction.  The extension would maintain the waiver status through the current school year.

10:30 a.m.        Graduation Data
MSDE will release to the State Board a report about four-year cohort graduation and dropout rates for 2014.

2 p.m.              Arts Education
The State Board will hear a report from the Governor’s P-20 Leadership Council Task Force on Arts Education in Maryland Schools.  The task force was co-chaired by Mary Ann Mears, Founder and Trustee, Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance, and Dr. Jack Smith, MSDE’s Chief Academic Officer.
