Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, April 24

BALTIMORE – The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 24, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on this month’s regular agenda include the following:

10:55 a.m. Every Student Succeeds Act

Staff will update the State Board on MSDE’s implementation of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. This month’s report will include a look at school improvement, academic targets, English language proficiency, and school climate.

11:40 p.m. Juvenile Services Education

The State Board will hear a report on MSDE’s Juvenile Service Education System (JSES). MSDE has had the responsibility for educating all juveniles within the state’s Department of Juvenile Services since 2013, providing instruction in core content curricula including language arts, mathematics, science and social studies based on the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.

12:00 p.m. Milken Educator

The State Board will honor Allison Felton, a math teacher at Anne Arundel’s Annapolis High School, the 2017-18 Maryland Milken Educator. Ms. Felton received the honor in a surprise presentation at her school in January.

3:25 p.m. Superintendent Reports

Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, will review for the State Board the recently released National Assessment of Education Progress results, the latest information on school safety, and some requests for weather-related school calendar waivers.
