**MEDIA ADVISORY** DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT TO CELEBRATE EARTH WEEK ACROSS MARYLAND

BALTIMORE, MD (APRIL 21, 2014) – Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Secretary Robert M. Summers will kick-off Earth Week with a tree planting tomorrow in Frostburg followed by several events and outings throughout the week celebrating MDE’s mission of protecting Maryland’s air, land and water.

WHERE & WHEN:

Tuesday, April 22

Western Maryland Tree Planting – Cabin Run Road, Frostburg, MD, 9 a.m. – Noon.
MDE Secretary Summers will join MDE’s Mining Program, students from the Allegany County Center for Career and Technical Education and volunteers from local watershed groups to plant 2,000 native hardwoods in Frostburg.

Wednesday, April 23

MDE Employee Clean Up of Gwynns Falls Trail – 2150 Washington Blvd., Baltimore, MD,
2 p.m. – 4 p.m. 
MDE employees will participate in a cleanup of the Gwynns Falls Trail.  More than 50 MDE employees are scheduled to participate in the two-hour cleanup event. The event is in partnership with the Friends of the Gwynns Falls Trail.

Color Maryland Green Creativity Contest Awards and Art Exhibit – 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
MDE Secretary Summers will join DNR Secretary Joe Gill  to announce the winners of the color Maryland Green Creativity contest and unveil the cover of the 2014-2015 Bay Game Activity Book.

Friday, April 25

Secretary Summers to visit students at Potomac Elementary School – 10311 River Road, Potomac, MD
Secretary Summers will visit third-grade students at Potomac Elementary for a discussion on how their actions impact local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay and what they can do to help reclaim the Bay.
