**Media Advisory** Department of Environment Secretary Summers to mark Read Across Maryland month, discuss climate change with students at The Siena School in Silver Spring

(BALTIMORE, MD)  March 11, 2014 – The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Secretary Robert M. Summers will visit with students at The Siena School in Silver Spring to celebrate Read Across Maryland month on Wednesday, March 12. The Secretary will read excerpts from “The Magic School Bus and The Climate Challenge” and discuss the impacts of climate change with fourth- and fifth-grade students. The book explains why the earth is getting warmer and brings a new, improved understanding to climate change, engaging and empowering youngsters to be a part of the solution.

The Siena School offers an educational program for bright, college-bound students who are challenged by language-based learning differences such as dyslexia. The program is designed for students with mild to moderate needs who experience a discrepancy between their intellectual abilities and academic achievement.

WHY:  March marks Read Across Maryland month. An offshoot of the National Education Association’s  Read Across America initiative, Read Across Maryland is sponsored by the Maryland State Education Association.  The program encourages students to read at least 30 minutes for 30 days beginning on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, and ending March 31st.
