Make Maryland plants part of your landscape

State nurseries sell more than $225 million in local plants

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Maryland Department of Agriculture encourages the state’s consumers to consider supporting local nurseries when landscaping their properties this spring. Maryland is home to a thriving nursery industry with 313 farms producing more than $225 million worth of plants.

“There are lots of local options for Marylanders to consider when planting perennials and annuals around our yards this spring,” said Secretary of Agriculture Joe Bartenfelder. “Maryland has many local greenhouses and nurseries. From hardware stores to farmers markets, many retailers stock Maryland-grown plants.”

The largest segment of the state’s nursery industry is wholesale. Markets for Maryland-grown plants stretch throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, and into Canada. According to the most recent census data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Maryland had $207 million of wholesale receipts in the nursery industry during FY2014.
