ANNAPOLIS, MD – Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder has named Matthew Teffeau as the Department’s new Director of Government Relations, effective January 19, 2016.

“We are pleased to welcome Matt to the Maryland Department of Agriculture,” said Secretary Bartenfelder. “Matt’s background in both state and federal government will be a great asset to the department, and his knowledge of Maryland’s agricultural community make him an ideal fit for the position.”

Teffeau joins the Department of Agriculture after serving three years as the Assistant Director of Government Relations at Maryland Farm Bureau. Prior to that, Teffeau gained legislative experience working for U.S. Representative Andy Harris in Washington, D.C., and the Maryland House Republican Caucus in Annapolis. During his time with Maryland Farm Bureau, Teffeau effectively lobbied members of the Maryland General Assembly on a range of issues including energy, natural resources and transportation.

“Growing up in such a rural part of Maryland makes me want to give back to the local agricultural community as much as I can,” said Teffeau. “I am excited for this opportunity to represent the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the diverse work of the agency to protect consumers, preserve the environment and promote agriculture.”

The Caroline County native graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Salisbury University. During his time at Salisbury University, Teffeau was a Presidential Citizen Scholar through the school’s Public Affairs and Civic Engagement program. Teffeau currently is enrolled in the LEAD Maryland Fellowship program, which is dedicated to identifying and developing leadership to serve agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

As Director of Government Relations, Teffeau will be responsible for all aspects of the Department’s state, local and federal legislative activities. He will also staff the Governor’s Intergovernmental Commission for Agriculture, an interagency policy group that helps to promote and protect Maryland’s agriculture through addressing policy and regulatory matters.
