Media Advisory: State Ag Secretary to Visit Worcester Co. Creamery on Wednesday as Part of Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail

IceCreamTrailJuly is National Ice Cream Month

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 30, 2015) – In celebration of Maryland’s ice cream trail and July as National Ice Cream Month, Maryland Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder will visit Chesapeake Bay Farms, Inc. in Worcester County this Wednesday to encourage all Marylanders to enjoy fresh, delicious ice cream. The Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail includes eight farms that stretch over more than 290 miles from Ocean City in the east to Washington County in the west. Under the program, people pick up an Ice Cream Trail Passport at any of the eight creameries (or online at www.marylandsbest.net), answer a question and have it “stamped” at each creamery. Those who submit a completed passport to MDA before September 23 will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize, which includes a $50 gift certificate to the winner’s favorite creamery.

Who/What: Secretary Bartenfelder will visit a Worcester County farm-based creamery that is on the “Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail.”

Where/Where: Wednesday, July 1

  • 2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Chesapeake Bay Farms, Inc., 4111 Whitesburg Road, Pocomoke (Worcester County)

Why:  To highlight the important contributions of Maryland’s 455 dairy farms which accounted for $244 million in sales in 2014; and to increase the public’s general understanding of dairy farming by encouraging them to visit a farm and see what dairy farming is really like, all while enjoying delicious, locally-produced ice cream.

Note to Reporters:

  • Secretary Bartenfelder visited Broom’s Bloom Dairy (Harford County), Keyes Creamery (Harford County), and Prigel Family Creamery (Baltimore County) on June 25 and will visit Kilby Cream (Cecil County) on July 28.
  • Several dairies in the state produce ice cream on farm but do not sell it directly to consumers on the farm. Those sites are not included in the Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail.
  • Photos will be available after the events by contacting MDA.
