Offenders sew for Reach of Washington County

TOWSON — This week the Maryland Correctional Training Center Sewing Program donated 49 quilts to Reach of Washington County.

Reach is a non-profit organization that assists with shelter for the homeless, placements for homeless families, food, prescription medication, financial training and more.

The 10 men in the program – many who had never sewn before –  now sew every day under the direction of Diana Smith, the Volunteer Coordinator who is an expert seamstress. The group uses entirely donated materials, mostly scraps made from used inmate clothing that can no longer be worn and would otherwise be thrown away.
