TOWSON, MD — Correctional Officer Jon Schenck has a culinary arts degree and a four-year degree in hotel management. He now uses his skills and training in an unlikely place: Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown.

The 22-year Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services veteran is the Correctional Dietary Manager at the facility where he supervises a staff of over 300 inmates who serve over 5,000 meals a day.

Schenck doesn’t dream of working in a five-star hotel or being a chef at a fancy restaurant — he is content with a well-paying job that has excellent retirement and health benefits.

“Just in those two aspects alone, it’s well worth it,” Schenck said.

Department hiring officials will be at the Washington County Public Schools Center for Education Services at 10435 Downsville Pike in Hagerstown on June 18th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. looking to hire 75 new workers.

In addition to dietary workers like Schenck, the department is seeking correctional officers, case managers, and nurses, as well as maintenance, technology,
records, and human resources staff. The state correctional industry has contributed mightily to the Hagerstown region by aiding the economy with good jobs.

“If you want to apply yourself, you can make a good career,” Schenck said.

Across the street at the Maryland Correctional Training Center, Katie Deatrich is a social worker who started out as an addictions counselor and is now a case management specialist.

With five years of experience in the department, Deatrich finds her job — trying to help rehabilitate inmates through steering them toward education, job training, and drug treatment —  incredibly meaningful.

Though Deatrich has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in social work, many of the jobs being offered at the Operation Hire Hagerstown event require a high school diploma or GED. And no experience is required.

“There are so many options once you get here,” Deatrich said. “There are so many places you can move to advance.”
