Message from Secretary Stephen T. Moyer

DPSCS MARYLAND

Today, Governor Hogan announced the closure of the Men’s Detention Center at the Baltimore City Detention Center.

The impact of this bold move enables us to better protect the public, our employees, and the detainees and offenders under our supervision — and save the taxpayers money.

The closure will have no impact on Staff who will remain at the facility until reassigned to other facilities in the Baltimore Correctional Complex. No jobs will be eliminated.

The facility should have been closed decades ago. It is obsolete, unsafe, and deteriorating; part of the structure pre-dates the Civil War; much of it is literally falling apart; and it is rife with persistent structural and maintenance issues.

The closure will be accomplished quickly and without compromising detainees’ access to their legal protections.

Special phone lines have been set up and family members will be provided with the new location of those detainees formerly housed at that facility:

Governor Hogan is changing Maryland. Under his leadership, we are changing the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. This momentous decision sets the course for the progressive changes ahead.
