BCDC today is a dozen buildings cobbled together from an original structure that opened in 1807:

  • It is one of the busiest city jails in the country.
  • The main area of the Men’s Detention Center (the part of the facility that will be closed) presently houses approximately 750 detainees.
  • BCDC currently has 772 employees.
  • There have been at least 11 major renovations to the facility since it was rebuilt in 1859 to replace the original jail.
  • The BCDC complex (which includes many separate areas that will not be closed) houses men, women, and juveniles who are charged as adults.
  • BCDC also houses a few short-sentenced inmates for the Division of Correction; the remainder of the population is pre-trial.
  • The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is the only correctional system in America to also operate a large metropolitan jail in addition to state prisons.AD2_3804
