Inmates join pothole repair effort

(Towson, MD) — With many Maryland roads covered in potholes after a rough winter, state highway crews can use all the help they can get.

Some of that help this spring is coming from offenders in Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) facilities.

Pre-release inmates who are a part of the DPSCS Public Safety Works crews have been helping the State Highway Administration keep up with the thousands of craters that have suddenly appeared in the wake of the snow and ice melt.

Recently, an inmate crew from Dorsey Run Correctional Facility in Jessup patched dozens of potholes in the Riverdale, Greenbelt, and College Park areas of Prince George’s County.

On any given day, 350 or more low-security inmates who are close to release are doing meaningful work all across the state for non-profits and state government agencies. To find out more, call Public Safety Works Coordinator John Rowley at 301.573. 7175.
