WCI continues to grow trees for the community

(Towson, MD) — Western Correctional Institution (WCI) recently received a grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to assist with the ongoing Cumberland Community Grow- Out Station operated at WCI in Cresaptown, MD.

The Grow-Out Station is an area dedicated to raising tree seedlings, specifically American Chestnut, that will ultimately be planted in various tri-state areas for environmental growth.  The program is a partnership between WCI, the City of Cumberland, the Cumberland Shade Tree Commission, Urban and Community Forestry, and the Allegany Forestry Board.

As the project progresses, the grant will be distributed in phases. Items received in the first phase were 22 tons of garden soil, 12 pairs of gloves, 6 trowels, 300 American Chestnut Seeds, and project ID stickers for plant containers.
