Maryland State foresters and their state and federal partners have signed a historic new plan to increase tree cover and improve water quality throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Maryland joined the Chesapeake Bay Program Director Nick DiPasquale and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell to sign the Chesapeake Bay Forest Restoration Strategy.
The Maryland Park Service (MPS) has reopened all but 11 of Maryland’s 66 State Parks after extensive clean-up and repairs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Seven of the reopened parks are open with limited services, some without electric power, while the remaining parks are open and fully operational. The 11 closed parks will remain closed as crews continue to clean up and repair infrastructure.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has decided to open the Foster tract of the Chesapeake Forest to public hunting, after taking public input for a month. DNR also plans to move all of the 15 proposed tracts from public hunting to the leased hunting program. The Department will hold a joint Forest/Wildllife & Heritage Services informational meeting for the hunting community and similar stakeholders about this decision and to answer their questions in the near future.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Service is giving Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to 37 volunteer fire departments across the State this year. DNR will help fund projects in 15 counties to provide these men and women with the tools to better fight wildfires in rural communities. Read more
