Jacklighting Deer and GunThe Maryland Natural Resources Police charged a crab poacher in Queen Anne’s County and two illegal deer hunters in Allegany County in recent cases.

An Elkridge man was criminally charged on Monday with eight counts of poaching after he was caught stealing crabs from watermen’s fishing gear and other natural resources violations.

Raymond David Bosley, 45, was stopped by officers on routine patrol on the Chesapeake Bay on Oct. 12. A check of his recreational vessel turned up numerous crabs, but no crabbing gear.

An investigation determined that Bosley had removed crabs from commercial crab pots in the area.

Bosley was charged with two counts of theft, crabbing after hours, recreational possession of female crabs, two counts of using fishing gear belonging to another person and failure to have proper identification.

He is scheduled to appear in Queen Anne’s District Court on Dec. 2. The maximum fine for all charges is $7,000.

In Allegany County, officers caught Shayon James Dawson, 19, of Flintstone, and Gene Robert Martz Jr., 39, of Ridgely, W. Va., after they shot an eight-point buck with the aid of a spotlight on Oct. 30.

Responding to a call for assistance, an officer found the buck on private property on Murley’s Branch Road in Flintstone. The officer was at the scene when a vehicle stopped briefly to let out two passengers.

The officer intercepted the two men as they ran to the deer carcass with flashlights. Both men admitted they shot the deer and neither man had a hunting license.

Dawson was charged with hunting from a vehicle, hunting with the assistance of an artificial light (jacklighting) and hunting deer at night. Martz was charged with having a loaded weapon in a vehicle, jacklighting and hunting at night. Additional charges are pending.

Both men must appear in Allegany District Court on Dec. 3. The maximum penalty for those charges is $5,000 for each man.
