DNR Brings the Great Outdoors to the Maryland State Fair!

Bird as part of the Scales and Tales program at the State Fair Discover the beauty and wonder of Maryland’s great outdoors through an interactive exhibit hosted by the Department of Natural Resources at the 133rd State Fair in Timonium, August 22 through September 1. The exhibit will be open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The State Fair is a terrific event that we look forward to all year,” said DNR Secretary Joe Gill. “Our staff is always excited and ready to answer all of the great questions that come our way. It really is a wonderful opportunity for us to offer folks a glimpse of DNR daily life, share our knowledge and speak a bit about the experiences we’ve had over the past year.”

The DNR “tent” (it’s actually a building and, yes, it’s air conditioned!) includes exciting, interactive activities, animals and information on everything from fishing, hiking, camping and State Park adventures to boating and hunting safety.

Visitors will also learn about DNR’s Youth Fishing Club; the annual Color Maryland Green student art contest and DNR photo contest; wildlife outdoor programs for men, women and children; invasive species; and volunteer opportunities. To help create a smarter, greener more sustainable future, citizens will learn how planting even one tree can help protect air and water quality, raise property values and save money on energy – and receive a $25 coupon to get started. Everyone is encouraged to stop by to see the agency’s water safety mascot who will be taking pictures and giving children free Rita’s Italian Ice coupons.

Some highlights of the DNR exhibit at this year’s fair also include:

  • Information on the new AccessDNR mobile app, a source for outdoor news and recreation;
  • Scales and Tales display of live birds of prey and native reptiles;
  • A fish exhibit featuring native species;
  • The 2014-15 Maryland Bay Game activity book;
  • Boating and hunting safety tips from Natural Resources Police officers; and
  • Wildlife conservation and management exhibits.
