Rocky Gap Casino Resort within Rocky Gap State Park is gearing up for a planned expansion on property leased from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Set to begin this spring, the enhancements will ease parking congestion to better accommodate increased visitation. The project will not involve any park-operated land or parking lots as established in the lease agreement.

A portion of the lakeside loop trail will be temporarily closed during the construction phase. This will be the only impact to park visitors.

“We are thrilled that Rocky Gap Casino Resort has been successful and proven to be a wonderful tenant, sharing our appreciation for the park’s beauty and natural surroundings,” said Park Manager Mary Ironside. “The project will not affect the look and feel of the park itself, as the agreement ensures the overall design is in keeping with our lodge theme and blends within a park setting.”

The expansion is taking place within the casino’s portion of the park, incorporated within the lease agreement when the project was initially conceptualized. The lot expansion ─ to add 150 spaces for a total of 750 ─ is an addition to an already established parking area directly in front of the main entrance. The work will also expand the Pro Shop, kitchen at Signatures Bar & Grill, and fitness center. Landscaping will be added around the resort and new parking lot. All enhancements are being done in accordance with park’s environmental guidelines.

“We pride ourselves on being responsive to the needs of our guests and these additions are a result of direct feedback we have received over the past year,” said Scott Just, general manager at Rocky Gap Casino Resort. “This fall, we planted 500 new trees around Rocky Gap State Park and we continue to work with DNR on other improvements including the additional landscaping.”

I beg to differ. Rocky Gap used to be a reliable restroom stop as I traveled through the state, especially during those times that the Sidling rest stop was closed. First the parking lot was torn up and now the new parking lot has a gate across it. I assume that one needs some kind of parking sticker to park there.

Sometimes I would also go to the gift shop at the lodge and view the craft exhibits. Those were gone during the remodeling. I haven’t been back to check lately because I can’t use the restroom first. I guess I don’t really have a reason to stop and take a break at Rocky Gap anymore.
