The Maryland Black Bear Hunt has Closed

The Maryland Department Natural Resources (DNR) closed the 2013 black bear hunting season at 9 p.m. today with hunters reporting 94 bears to mandatory check stations in Western Maryland. The bear hunting season lasted six days in Garrett and Allegany counties.

The average live weight of the bears taken this year was 142 pounds. Mark Martin of Oakland, took the largest bear of the season, a 392-pound male.

The hunt by the numbers:

  • 94 bears taken
  • 70 from Garrett County, 24 from Allegany County
  • 142 lbs. average weight
  • 70 perecent of the bears were taken on private land
  • 748 hunters participated in the hunt and 3,504 hunters applied for a permit

The Maryland Natural Resources Police investigated 13 locations for suspected illegal bait. Hunters were observed at seven of those locations and charged with hunting black bears with the aid of bait.  NRP charged a total of 19 individuals with various violations during the 2013 black bear season. Charges included failure to wear fluorescent orange, failure to maintain visual contact and hunting black bears with the aid of bait.

      Would be nice if when you posted the violators, you could specify what violation they were charged with. There’s a big difference between someone who didn’t read the rules and was out bowhunting for deer without their flourescent orange and someone who was hunting for bear over a bait pile. Yes they are all in violation, but some alot worse than others!
