Earlier this month, the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) welcomed 25 surveyors and geographic information system (GIS) experts from the Jiangsu Province in China to its headquarters in Baltimore. The group was with the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Land and Resources ─ Jiangsu Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geo-Information.

MGS geologists David Bolton, David Brezinski, Robert Conkwright, Andrew Staley and Richard Ortt, gave brief presentations on how its agency has applied GIS systems to past and current projects, including geohazard identification of sinkholes in karst geology, habitat mapping for oyster bed restoration site selection, and aquifer mapping for drinking water protection and identification. The group was very impressed by how Maryland used GIS in these assignments.
