NRP Responds to Boat Fire on the Sassafras River

boat fire 2The fire that destroyed a 42-foot pleasure boat Monday morning in the Sassafras River has been ruled accidental.

Natural Resources Police and Galena Fire Department were called shortly after 11 a.m. by the owner of the boat, James Peacock Jr., of Galena, to report smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment.

Peacock and a passenger swam to safety near Starkey Farm Lane and the boat drifted to shore. The boat was a total loss.

The owner told police his boat developed mechanical problems as it passed Ordinary Point on the way to the Chesapeake Bay. When Peacock opened the engine cover, air fanned the smoldering fire.

Maryland Department of the Environment was called to the scene to check the hull for leaking fluids.
