Fort Frederick to Host Families in Nature Labor Day Weekend

Three-day event to feature a variety of outdoor activities

When: Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to experience the scenic wilds of Fort Frederick State Park through a variety of activities and guided explorations at the Families in Nature Labor Day weekend. The three-day event will feature outdoor programs and presentations, along with plenty of ways for visitors to enjoy and explore the park on their own, or with the help of a ranger.

Scheduled events are as follows:

Saturday, August 31:

  • 11 a.m. Crafts for kids;
  • 1 p.m. Medicinal plants hike
  • 3 p.m. Nature Demonstration
  • 8:30 p.m. Astronomy Program

Seating for the astronomy program is limited. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Guests may bring their own star gazing devices.       

Sunday, September 1

  • 11 a.m. Crafts for kids
  •  1 p.m. Nature Demonstration
  • 3 p.m. Guided hike along the Potomac River

Monday, September 2

  • 11 a.m. Butterfly garden demonstration
  •  1 p.m. Guided nature hike
  •    3 p.m. Crafts for kids

The TriState Astronomers will also have a solar telescope set up during the day on Saturday for viewing the sun as well as several telescopes, including a 10-inch Dobsonian, set up in the evening for a star-gazing program. There will be other ongoing activities led by a ranger or naturalist throughout the weekend.

Self-guided activities include biking and hiking on the nearby Western Maryland Rail Trail and C&O canal towpath, boating and fishing on Big Pool, birding and visiting the park’s Nature Center.

All programs begin at the Nature Center, located adjacent to Captain Wort’s store. Sturdy walking shoes, insect repellant and sunscreen are recommended. Adults must accompany their children during the programs.
