From the Bay, For the Bay is Back!

More than 70 Restaurants Have Signed Up

Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the return of the From the Bay, For the Bay Dine Out, a week-long celebration of Maryland seafood benefiting the Oyster Recovery Partnership. More than 70 high-profile restaurants have already signed up, including Ryleigh’s Oyster House, Woodberry Kitchen, Equinox, and Matchbox. Last year’s inaugural promotion proved a success, raising $25,000 for oyster restoration projects.

“I would like to applaud the continued efforts of the organizers, restaurants and patrons in keeping the From the Bay, For the Bay Dine Out going strong,” said Governor O’Malley. “Buying local strengthens the State’s economy and supports jobs among watermen, seafood wholesalers and retailers, and the restaurant industry.”

From October 6 through 13, participating restaurants from Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia are featuring fresh Maryland seafood dishes. For every dinner the restaurants sell, they will donate $1 to the Oyster Recovery Partnership, a non-profit organization working to rebuild the Chesapeake Bay’s native oyster population.

Governor Martin O’Malley declared October Maryland Seafood month, because it is one of the best times of the year to enjoy food caught from the Bay. During the fall months, the fish are abundant and Maryland’s iconic blue crabs are larger and heavier, fattening up for the winter.

“Maryland is known for having some of the best seafood in the nation,” said Steve Vilnit, DNR Fisheries marketing director. “So what better, easier, or more delicious way to support Bay restoration than to dine on delicacies such as sweet, blue crabs, roasted oysters or baked rockfish?”

Last year, nearly 200 restaurants and 25,000 patrons participated in the event, raising $25,000 for ORP. Donations from the promotion go directly back into the Bay by supporting projects such as producing and planting tens of millions of spat on shell (baby oysters), and expanding the regional Shell Recycling Alliance that recycles restaurants’ used oyster shells.

Over the past decade, the Oyster Recovery Partnership has planted hundreds of millions of oysters in the Bay. Oysters are a critical species to the Bay’s long-term recovery ─ a healthy oyster reef not only filters the Bay’s waters, but also provides habitat for other marine life such as blue crabs and striped bass.

“From the Bay, For the Bay is a win-win, both for the Chesapeake Bay and for the public,” said Stephan Abel, Executive Director of the Oyster Recovery Partnership. “Citizens can dine on delicious food and feel good about patronizing establishments that value locally-sourced seafood and the hardworking watermen who supply it, while also supporting vital oyster restoration currently ongoing in the Bay.”

Citizens are encouraged to visit and see which of their favorite restaurants are participating so they can enjoy a delicious seafood meal and help restore the Bay. DNR hosts a webpage and mobile web app featuring interactive maps to help seafood lovers locate and contact participating restaurants.

Through events like From the Bay, For the Bay, DNR and its partners are working to highlight the State’s down-home delicacies and hardworking watermen, and support the Bay’s restoration.
