Youth interested in wildlife and the outdoors are invited to join staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local conservation groups for the 4th annual Fall Junior Hunter Field Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 15 in Bittinger. Young people, ages 8 to 16, interested in wildlife activities and shooting sports will experience the fun of the great outdoors while learning about natural resources management.
Scott Cusick of Jackson, NJ set a new Maryland State record by reeling in a scalloped hammerhead shark weighing 266 pounds, eight ounces, at the White Marlin Open tournament on August 8. His catch won the tournament’s largest shark category, earning him a prize of $5,150.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering a tool for educators across the State to teach their students about Maryland’s wildlife. Teachers are invited to borrow wildlife education trunks, which feature unique, hands-on, interdisciplinary lesson plans on white-tailed deer, black bears and the State’s 14 furbearer species. More than 70 Restaurants Have Signed Up
Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the return of the From the Bay, For the Bay Dine Out, a week-long celebration of Maryland seafood benefiting the Oyster Recovery Partnership. More than 70 high-profile restaurants have already signed up, including Ryleigh’s Oyster House, Woodberry Kitchen, Equinox, and Matchbox. Last year’s inaugural promotion proved a success, raising $25,000 for oyster restoration projects.
More than 60 Maryland State Park lifeguards vied for top honors in the 2012 Maryland Park Service (MPS) Lifeguard Competition on August 7 at Greenbrier State Park. The team from Gunpowder Falls State Park won first place, Assateague State Park’s guards came in second and those from Cunningham Falls State Park placed third.
Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to experience the scenic wilds of Fort Frederick State Park through a variety of activities and guided explorations at the Families in Nature Holiday Weekend, starting at 11 a.m. September 1- 3.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Service is giving Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to 37 volunteer fire departments across the State this year. DNR will help fund projects in 15 counties to provide these men and women with the tools to better fight wildfires in rural communities. Read more
